Civil Engineer (Transportation) Intern
This is a term-limited position starting mid-May and funded through approximately August 14, 2026.
The City of Littleton is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Transportation Engineering Intern. You will work alongside experienced engineers and planners on real-world projects that shape how people move in and around the City of Littleton. This position offers an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the design and construction of transportation projects ranging from small neighborhood improvements to large, regionally significant project initiatives, particularly focused on multimodal facilities.

Starting pay at or near $25.30 per hour
This part-time position is non-exempt per FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.
Work Schedule: This position will work full-time (40 hours per week) during the summer and is anticipated to run through approximately August 14, 2026, with the possibility of extension based on budget and need. The possible extension of the position may include part time work (15-20 hours per week) during the school year.
This position will be expected to primarily work in-person, at the office. However, hybrid work options are available (up to 2 days remote per week).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including planners, civil engineers, operations crews, and public officials.
- Assist in the planning and design of multimodal transportation facilities including bike lanes, shared-use paths, pedestrian corridors, and traffic calming measures.
- Support production of concept layouts, and technical drawings using tools such as AutoCAD Civil 3D and Bluebeam Review.
- Assist construction inspection, quantity measurement, and field observations.
- Help prepare reports, cost estimates, and project presentations for project teams, stakeholders, and community engagement efforts.
- Assist in review of engineering plans, traffic impact studies, and work zone traffic control plans related to private development.
- Collect and process field data such as traffic and bike/ped counts, which may involve climbing ladders, driving city vehicles, and carrying materials weighing 20-30 lbs.
- Inventories and assists in the mapping of multimodal facilities utilizing ArcGIS Pro/Online.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited program or a related field; OR
- Currently pursuing a graduate degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
- An equivalent combination of education, training and work experience that produces the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position may be considered.
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment criminal background check and motor vehicle records check.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Basic proficiency working in design and review software such as AutoCAD Civil 3D, Synchro/SimTraffic, and Bluebeam Review.
- Working knowledge of relevant design manuals and regulations including Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), AASHTO A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets, AASHTO Roadside Design Guide, AASHTO Guide for the Development of Bicycle Facilities, Highway Capacity Manual (HCM), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and Public Right-of-Way Accessibility Guidelines (PROWAG)
- Experience with GIS software such as ArcGIS Pro or similar platforms.
- Experience reviewing or producing civil engineering design plans, traffic impact studies, construction materials submittals, and work zone traffic control plans.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and written communication skills.

- Tasks may involve driving city vehicles, climbing ladders, and lifting materials weighing up to 30 lbs.
