Fleet Services Technician (Entry or Senior)

Position may be filled at the Entry or Senior level, depending on qualifications and department needs.

The City of Littleton has an opportunity for a skilled automotive technician to join a talented Fleet team as a Fleet Services Technician. Fleet Services Technicians perform maintenance and repair on a wide variety of city operated vehicles and equipment. Work includes troubleshooting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining passenger cars, light trucks, heavy trucks, off-road equipment, police vehicles and other related equipment.

The ideal candidate brings hands-on experience with a broad range of vehicle types and possesses in-depth knowledge of maintenance and repair for Class 6–8 trucks. Hiring pay range for ENTRY level: $30.40 - $32.00 per hour

Hiring pay range for SENIOR level: $34.90 - $36.80 per hour

This full-time position is non-exempt per FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.

Work Schedule:  This full-time position will work 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday. This position will participate in a rotating on-call schedule to provide support as needed, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Responds to on-site emergencies promptly to ensure safety and operational continuity.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs semi-skilled, skilled, and administrative duties in maintenance and repair of a wide variety of vehicles and equipment. 
  • Troubleshoots, identifies, and repairs related potential or existing problems.
  • Performs general maintenance of passenger cars and light trucks including one-ton trucks; heavy trucks and off-road equipment; police vehicles, other emergency vehicles and related equipment.
  • Diagnoses, troubleshoots, and adjusts and repairs to vehicles and equipment including, but not limited to diesel and gasoline engines, fuel systems, drive train components, pumps, brake systems, air conditioning systems, heating systems, exhaust systems, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems, suspension and steering systems, and assemblies.
  • Tunes gasoline, diesel, and alternative powered engines.
  • Installs and repairs electrical, lighting, and general accessories.
  • Prepares work orders, and documents parts used for vehicle maintenance and repair, creates records and reports related to fleet maintenance activities.
  • Maintains work area, tools, and equipment in a clean and safe condition; responsible for reporting unsafe acts or conditions to supervisor.
  • Reviews daily work assignments and reports daily work progress to supervisor. 
  • Responds, as necessary, to emergency calls to make temporary or permanent repairs or adjustments to city vehicles and equipment.
  • Delivers work products and services within the assigned full-time work schedule.
  • Performs janitorial tasks, as required, to maintain the cleanliness of fleet maintenance area.
  • Performs welding or machine work necessary to fabricate parts or other components to complete repairs on assigned vehicles and equipment.
  • Picks up and delivers vehicles, parts, and equipment as required.
  • Performs other similar assignments and projects as required.
  • May serve as an Emergency Worker.
  • Participates in a rotating on-call schedule to provide support as needed, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Responds to on-site emergencies promptly to ensure safety and operational continuity.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications for ENTRY level Fleet Services Technician:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; and
  • Two (2) years of work experience in maintaining and repairing automobiles, heavy trucks including diesel engines and air brake systems, and a variety of equipment; or
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and work experience that produces the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position may be considered.
  • Must have certifications and licenses within six (6) months of hire:
    • Valid Class “B”’ Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake
    • 609 EPA Refrigerant Recovery
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment criminal background check, motor vehicle records check, DOT drug screen and DOT physical.
  • Possess a complete tool set to preform daily job functions. Specialty tools will be discussed with management as warranted.

Minimum Qualifications for SENIOR level Fleet Services Technician:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; and
  • Four (4) years of work experience in maintaining and repairing automobiles, heavy trucks including diesel engines and air brake systems, and a variety of equipment; or
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and work experience that produces the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position may be considered.
  • Must have certifications and licenses within six (6) months of hire:
    • Valid Class “B”’ Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake.
    • 609 EPA Refrigerant Recovery
    • Four (4) ASE Auto (A) or Truck (T) Certifications
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment criminal background check, motor vehicle records check, DOT drug screen and DOT physical.
  • Possess a complete tool set to preform daily job functions. Specialty tools will be discussed with management as warranted.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with class 6-8 trucks strongly preferred but not required

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, materials, and methods of general automotive mechanics, computerized engines, lighting systems, and other computerized components.
  • Basic knowledge of the principles, practices, materials, and methods of heavy-duty diesel and air brake maintenance and repair; electrical system maintenance and repair for automobiles and trucks; welding and fabrication; equipment operation and use; hand and power tool operation.
  • Ability to install and repairs electrical, lighting, and general accessories.
  • Mechanical and basic mathematical aptitude, understanding and analytic ability to diagnose, troubleshoot and repair passenger automobiles, gasoline and diesel trucks, police vehicles and equipment; and operate these vehicles and equipment to perform essential job functions.
  • Ability to obtain a diesel emissions (opacity) inspection license.
  • Ability to attend work-related training sessions to improve skill levels that may occasionally require class attendance during evening hours or on weekends.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and interactions with supervisors, other city employees, vendors, and the public through oral and written communications; observes and follows established city and department policies, procedures, rules; orders, and instructions from the supervisor in the daily conduct of the job.
  • Strong analytical and technical skills with ability to troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair vehicles and equipment.
  • Strong computer skills including standard Microsoft Office applications.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers at all levels.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, providing assistance, expertise, and sharing information with others, working toward solutions.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to quickly changing priorities; ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a calm, organized manner.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy with the ability to create and update operation and maintenance records, and related documents to perform the essential functions of the position.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:

  • Physical requirements include the performance of heavy work consisting of physically demanding tasks that include but are not limited to frequently lifting and carrying tools and toolboxes weighing up to 50 pounds with or without assistance; occasionally pushing and pulling diagnostic machines and toolboxes weighing up to 100 pounds with or without assistance.
  • Work is performed indoors in a vehicle maintenance (shop) environment.  Minimal outdoor work includes the operation of a variety of city vehicles and equipment and providing emergency roadside repair or vehicle retrieval. This work includes exposure to extreme cold, with or without temperature changes; extreme heat with or without temperature changes; wet and/or humid weather conditions, snow, ice, hail, and rain.

MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED:

A variety of mechanics’ hand and power tools and mechanical equipment including but not limited to wrenches, drills, screwdrivers, hammers, pliers; tire-changing equipment; vehicle lifts and hoists; arbor press; air compressors and air tools; diagnostic machines; cutting and welding equipment; a variety of electronic and mechanical testing equipment and devices; passenger cars; light and heavy trucks; two-way radios; and telephones.
