Librarian - Programming and Outreach (Adult Services)


The City of Littleton has an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and innovative Librarian to join the Bemis Public Library’s Adult Services team.

The Programming and Outreach Librarian will be responsible for leading the management, design, and implementation of library programs and classes for adults and seniors. The Programming and Outreach Librarian also assists with and participates in outreach efforts throughout the community. Librarians provide expert and excellent customer service to library patrons, answer reference, technology, and reader’s advisory questions, and instruct on how to use library services and resources, including print, electronic reference resources and digital content.

Hiring pay range $62,605 - $65,900 per year

This full-time position is exempt per FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation.

Work Schedule: Exact schedule to be determined. Monday-Friday/Saturday, weekends and evenings required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manages, designs, and implements programs/classes. This includes the adult summer reading program, monthly educational and entertaining adult and senior-focused programs, book clubs, and other relevant programming.

  • In coordination with Library Communications Specialist, promotes programs via library website, library events calendar, newsletter, social media and other appropriate avenues.

  • Tracks and reports program statistics to supervisor. Prepares monthly report for supervisor.

  • Participates in outreach activities to the Littleton community and library outreach booths at community programs and events.

  • Represents the library in community/city/regional interest groups or working groups.

  • Participates in division staff meetings, and division planning, problem-solving and policy discussions. May participate in library committees to achieve strategic goals.

  • Compiles and curates content for LibGuides, flyers and informational materials.

  • Uses reference interview techniques to assist with patron information needs and reader’s advisory.

  • Coordinates and helps manage use of the library’s meeting spaces and gallery exhibits.

  • Provides formal and informal training to patrons in the use of library resources, online catalog, electronic reference resources, digital content, public technology, the Internet, library equipment, and patron’s personal digital devices.

  • Conducts tours and presents information on library resources to community organizations and groups.

  • Serves as backup driver for the Bookmobile.

  • Maintains daily order and safety. Consistently enforces library policies, code of conduct, and safety protocols.

  • Attends conferences, meetings, and workshops to keep current with issues and literature.

  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of library services, resources, and technologies.

  • Performs other similar assignments and projects as required.

  • May serve as an Emergency Worker.


 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s Degree in Library Science, or a completion of degree within a year of hire; and

  • Two (2) years of work experience as a Librarian working with adults and/or seniors; or

  • An equivalent combination of education, training and work experience that produces the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position may be considered.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license.

  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment criminal background check and motor vehicle records check.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience developing and implementing library programs for adults and seniors.

  • Public Library experience strongly preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and manage community partnerships.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

  • Expert knowledge of and ability to apply general principles and specific details of adult literature and adult and senior programming.

  • Working knowledge of event planning and coordination.

  • Expert knowledge of the principles, procedures and issues of public library operations and management, including safety and conduct.

  • Advanced project management skills and abilities.

  • Knowledge of basic budgeting, best practices and budget application within the library system.

  • Ability to evaluate effectiveness of programs and services relative to intended outcomes, and identify best use of library resources and public funds.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:

  • Most work is performed indoors in a public library building environment. Some work is performed outdoors in moderate temperatures on concrete, grass, or paved surfaces for occasional outdoor programs.

  • Work is performed standing; walking; and sitting.  Requires: frequent lifting and carrying of books and chairs weighing up to 30 pounds; frequent pushing of book carts weighing up to 70 pounds with or without assistance.

  • The working environment includes occasional exposure to dusts from books and other library materials; occasional exposure to poor building ventilation; and occasional exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards from computers and other library equipment.

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED:

Personal computer with assigned software (including but not limited to the library’s ILS and Discovery layer, office software, and online databases), computer peripherals (such as printers, scanners, LCD projectors, etc.), computer tablets, telephones, photocopy machines, books, magazines, multimedia materials, eBook readers, and alarm system.
